Self Care As a Parent

Updated: May 23, 2023

Mamas, looking after a little person all day, can take the best out of all of us. It’s important to remember to look after yourself, too. Here are our top tips on creating time for YOU and what to do with it once you have it.

How to make time for yourself as a parent

Stretching and breathing

Rise 20 minutes earlier than your baby (when manageable!)

Begin with a couple of rounds of sun salutations or stretching

Do 5 minutes of pranayama practice. Belly breathing, Ujjayi breath or Nadi Shodhana

5-10 minutes of seated meditation (download a meditation timer app).

Take a moment to fill your cup

Incorporate things daily that make you happy, and take time to relish and enjoy them. Maybe it is that cup of chai or coffee!

Stay connected

Surround yourself with people who uplift your energy, and don’t be afraid or too proud to accept help when offered.

Spend time outside

Get outside in nature when possible. This will have a calming effect on both you and your baby.

Tune in with yourself

Take some conscious diagrammatic breaths at certain times of the day. Make it a habit to return to the breath in certain situations, e.g. when driving the car or feeding your baby.

Start to become aware of any unconscious repetitive, unhelpful thoughts that may keep appearing, such as guilt, unworthiness or inferiority. The first step to change is becoming aware of them, not letting them slip past your consciousness, and then realise that they are just ‘thoughts’ and not the truth or your true self.

Nighttime routine

Body scan during the day and in bed at night. Especially if your mind is racing and sleep is not happening. Start from your big toes and work your way up to the crown of your head, gently encouraging each body part to relax and let go. Finish the day in gratitude. List three things you are grateful for from the day. Remember that powerful proverb ‘this too shall pass’ when having a tough moment/day.
